Course Details

This 4 day course, covers 2 separate qualifications.  Between 9 - 4 on days 1 - 3 is the First Aid at Work and between 4 - 6 on days 1 - 3 and all day on day 4 is the Pool Emergency Responder

FIRST AID AT WORK

This qualification is aimed at those responsible for First Aid in the Work environment.

The First Aid at Work Course lasts for 18 hours and your attendance for all of these hours is required in order for you to complete the course.  The qualification is certificated through STA

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to

1    Understand the role of the first aider including reference to
    a) The importance of preventing cross infection
    b) The importance of preventing cross infection
    c) The need for recording incidents and actions
    d) Use of available equipment
2    Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
3    Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizures)
4    Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator
5    Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
6    Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
7    Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
8    Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries
9    Provide first aid to a casualty with
10    Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal cord injuries
11    Chest injuries
12    Burns and scalds
13    Eye injuries
14    Sudden poisoning
15    Anaphylactic shock
16    Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid.

Assessment


You will need to need to complete a worksheet for each of the 2 units

First Aid at Work

You will need to demonstrate competence through internal assessment for:
Unconscious casualty
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation with the use of an Automated External Defibrillator
Wound Injury including management for Shock
Fracture Management included elevated and support sling
Management of a conscious casualty
Management of a casualty with a Head Injury
Management of a casualty who is choking, using a choking vest.

Pool Emergency Responder

This qualification is aimed at those responding to incidents within the Swimming Pool, where constant Poolside Supervision is not recommended as outlined in Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools (MSG 179).  The qualification is certificated through the Safety Training Awards.

The course is made up of various components

Theory
Theory topics include The legislative background, the swimming pool, Pool safety operating procedures, Hazard. 

The sessions are delivered through means of discovery, group work and keynote presentations.

This section will be assessed by means of worksheet which will need to be completed and marked prior to the end of the course.

Resuscitation Skills
These sessions will be practical and will involve you not only completing the skill but also acting as a casualty for another learner.  If you have any mobility issues please discuss this prior to booking onto the course.

Topics covered will include treatment of an unconscious casualty who is breathing normally, an unconscious Adult Sudden not breathing normal, an unconscious Adult who has drowned, a Junior who is not breathing and an infant who is not breathing normally.  Also covered, is management of a casualty with a spinal cord injury, who is conscious, unconscious but breathing and not breathing normally.

This section is formally assessed by the tutor at the end of the course.

Pool Rescue Skills

Topics covered will include:

  • Using poolside rescue aid (torpedo buoy and throw bag)
  • Rescue to a casualty in the water by using a torpedo buoy, 
  • Effective treatment and landing for an unconscious casualty 
  • A casualty with a spinal cord injury
  • Situations appropriate to Pool Emergency Responder where the incident has already occurred and you will need to respond to it.

The water section will be delivered in 4 sessions each of an 1 hour and half in duration each.  You will need in addition to swimming costume, t-shirt, shorts and a towel for each session in the water.

This section will be assessed by worksheet which will need to be completed prior to the end of the course and formal assessment by the tutor at the end of the course.

First Aid Skills
This will be accredited by prior leaning from the First Aid at Work.

This section will be assessed by worksheets.

The following terms apply to all bookings made through the website www.swimmingpooltraining.co.uk in the case of request for transfer: More than 4 weeks before commencement date first transfer at no charge, subsequent transfer, 25% of amount charged Between 2 - 4 weeks before Commencement date 25% of amount charged Less than 2 weeks before Commencement date 50% of amount charged In the case of cancellation: More than 4 weeks before commencement date Full Refund Between 2 - 4 weeks before Commencement date 50% of amount charged Less than 2 weeks before Commencement date 100% of amount charged In the case of late attendance for course Less than 15 minutes from the stated time of the start of each day. Delegate will be allowed to continue with the course but maybe required to stay behind at the end of the day to complete any assessment/paperwork or learning More than 15 minutes but less than 30 minutes from the stated time of the start of each day Will be at the Tutors discretion whether the learner will be able to continue. The learner must have contacted the tutor prior to the official start time . The tutors decision is non negotiable . If the leaner is unable to continue, they will forfeit any money paid or invoiced. More than 30 minutes from the stated start time. The learner will not be able to continue with the course and will forfeit any money paid or invoiced . In all cases, notice of cancellation must be confirmed in writing addressed to the contact details on the booking confirmation email.
