Course Details

This qualification is aimed at those responding to incidents within a swimming lesson.  This qualification is certificated through the Safety Training Awards.

How will the course be delivered

The course will consist of a two and a half hour online module prior to the delivery of five and a half hours practical delivery.  You will need to complete the online module prior to the practical delivery.  If you have not completed the online module prior to the practical delivery, you will not be able to do the practical delivery and will need to book onto another course.  Please note there will be a charge for this

Theory

Theory topics include

  • Poolside Safety Operating Procedures

These sessions are delivered through online presentations.  You will need to achieve 100% on the online modules.  You will also need to complete a worksheet during the practical delivery under examination conditions.

Resuscitation Skills

The theory to this session will be online and then the practical will involve you not only completing the skill but also acting as a casualty for another learner.  If you have any mobility issues please discuss this prior to booking onto the course.

Topics covered will include 

  • Chain of survival
  • Adult basic life support
  • Basic life support for paediatric and drowning casualty
  • Management of an unconscious casualty
  • demonstration of obtaining an airway on a spinal cord injury
  • Understand the importance of recording, reporting and analysis pool emergency situations

This section is formally assessed by the tutor at the end of the course and informally by Multi choice and multi answer questions during the online delivery.

Pool Rescue Skills

Topics covered will include:

  • Using poolside rescue aid (torpedo buoy and throw bag)
  • Rescue to a casualty in the water by using a torpedo buoy,
  • Effective treatment and landing for an unconscious casualty
  • Retrieval of a submersible manikin from the bottom of the swimming pool
  • A casualty with a spinal cord injury
  • Know how to respond to a pool emergency situation

The theory to the water section will be covered online prior to the course and then delivered in 4 sessions each of an 1 hour and half in duration each.  You will need in addition to swimming costume, t-shirt, shorts and a towel for each session in the water.  You will need to not only do the skill, but also act as a casualty for other course delegate.  One of the skills will be lifted out of the water.  If you do not need to

This section will be assessed by the tutor at the end of the course.

First Aid Skills

This section of the course covers dealing with a user of the Pool.  The qualification does not comply with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations of 1981.

This theory section will be delivered online prior to the course for which you will need to complete Multi choice and multi answer questions.  You will need to demonstrate practical demonstration of management of the first aid conditions during the practical delivery.

  • Choking
  • Bleeding and Shock
  • Spinal Injuries
  • Asthma
  • Hyperventilation

Pre requisites

Confident in the water and able to swim 25 metres
Able to retrieve a 30Kg Submersible manikin from bottom of Swimming Pool
Over 14 years of age
Complete online deliver of approx 6 hours prior to attending the course
Can complete CPR skills on manikins during the course.

Terms & Conditions

in the case of request for transfer:
More than 4 weeks before commencement date first transfer at no charge, subsequent transfer, 25% of amount charged
Between 2 - 4 weeks before Commencement date 25% of amount charged
Less than 2 weeks before Commencement date 50% of amount charged 
In the case of cancellation: 
More than 4 weeks before commencement date Full Refund
Between 2 - 4 weeks before Commencement date 50% of amount charged
Less than 2 weeks before Commencement date 100% of amount charged 
In the case of late attendance for course
Less than 15 minutes from the stated time of the start of each day. Delegate will be allowed to continue with the course but maybe required to stay behind at the end of the day to complete any assessment/paperwork or learning 
More than 15 minutes but less than 30 minutes from the stated time of the start of each day Will be at the Tutors discretion whether the learner will be able to continue. The learner must have contacted the tutor prior to the official start time . The tutors decision is non negotiable . If the leaner is unable to continue, they will forfeit any money paid or invoiced. 
More than 30 minutes from the stated start time. The learner will not be able to continue with the course and will forfeit any money paid or invoiced . 
In all cases, notice of cancellation must be confirmed in writing addressed to the contact details on the booking confirmation email.
